Jacob & Co.’s unexpected offering named the Quenttin – from their über ‘Bling’ watch line. A 56mm vertical barreled wristwatch – competing aesthetically with the Cabestan, both with such limited production, there should be room for more roller wheel display watches and hopefully one that doesn’t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars like these. The Jaz Derby first created this style with their Swissonic in 1974.

In 2001, The firm created the Opus range; the concept behind this line of designer watches, to create an exceptional time piece each year in partnership with one of Switzerland’s most gifted independent horologists.

This year sees the arrival of the Opus 7, a stunning time piece that opts for a very clever mechanism to display the time. Alternative time displays are by no means a new gimmick for H.W. each Opus has its own unique time display, Opus 4 even displays the time on both sides.

The Opus 7, co designed by Andreas Strehler, is a mechanical, manually winding watch made from rhodium-plated white gold. The diameter of the case is 45mm and there are a total of 34 jewels throughout. The time is displayed by alternating dials/cogs that change by pushing the crown. The first push shows hours, the second push, minutes and the third push enables a power saving mode that extends battery life by 60 hours.

What is especially clever about this display is that, due to the nature of the alternating arms, the time can not be told from just one glance. If your wrist happens to be snapped in a photo or video the time you were captured will not be apparent. A great idea for those who have the chance of being caught out in their secret affairs! Whilst this may seem like a small niche in the market, it doesn’t really matter as there are only 50 available with a price tag of 50,000 GPB.

The 10:10 position has been documented since the 1920’s, adverts in Times Magazine before this date show no such arrangement. Some adverts have also arranged the time to read 8:20 which may be key to really finding out why the time is set in these positions.

The Lincoln Theory

Some people believe that the position represents the time that Abraham Lincoln died. Lincoln was shot at approx 10:15pm and later died at approx 7:22pm so the times really don’t coincide, plus the exact same myth is also reported with John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. JFK died at approx 8:18 (very close to 8:20) and so they believe the 10:10 position is an inversion of this time. In the UK people believe that this may be the time Guy Fawkes planned to blow up the House’s of Parliament, but considering these theories have no evidence and none of the times are exact, it seems a little difficult to believe.

V For Victory

Ex Veterans From World War Two have claimed that the time represents V for Victory, this a great little yarn that reminds us all that the world pulled together to help fight a conquering army. However the 10:10 time has been documented way before WWII and it doesn’t explain why some images read 8:20.

The Smile Theory

Another theory behind the position of the hands is that 10:10 represents a smile which is aesthetically pleasing for marketing reasons. The smile position has pleasing symmetrical properties and apparently attracts buyers, this is not far from the truth but it also doesn’t explain why some adverts have been documented to read 8:20.

The Timex Explanation

With all of these theories on offer it made sense to contact Timex, a major watch brand, to see what they had to say.

Timex said that the hands on timepieces are placed at 10:10 because it frames the company Logo, it also keeps the arms out of the way of any other details or dials. Timex also mentioned that the exact time is usually 10:10 with the second hand at six, this creates perfect symmetry that is aesthetically pleasing to the buyer.

When asked about the time 8:20 Timex said this used to be the industry standard for the same reasons, however it was later decided that this position looked too much like a frown and created an unhappy look.

So it seems that the smile theory is actually closest to the truth. Research has proven that an aesthetically pleasing appearance can attract more buyers and in this competitive market anything and everything counts.

Edox, who are now official watch manufacturers of Koenigsegg, was founded by Christian Ruefly in the late 19th century and have been known for creating classic time pieces ever since. This watch is no exception, there will be only 30 available worldwide and another 10 limited edition watches encrusted with real diamonds which makes this watch a very sort after piece.

The watch features an automatic Edox 45 Chronograph movement with a tachymeter scale on the dial which is hidden by the cover. The hinged case resembles the hinged doors found on the CCX and the chronograph is styled to resemble a dashboard. The face sports a very distinctive curved sapphire crystal to protect the carbon fiber dial and the rest of the body is made from titanium and stainless steel. The strap is made from crocodile skin and comes in orange or black.

The diamond encrusted version is expected to sell for approx 30,000 dollars and the non-diamond encrusted version for slightly less. The watch is available now however with only 40 on offer worldwide they might not be around for too long.
